Model client
By Matier and Ross
San Francisco Chronicle

May 27, 2007 – Attorney extraordinaire John Burris has held many press conferences with many interesting clients over the years, but nothing could match the media rollout staged by pinup star/victim Esther Hwang when she announced a $1 million brutality suit against San Francisco police and the city.

For starters, the statuesque former aide to former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown decided to hold the press conference last week at a modeling studio -- right next door to the Centerfolds strip club in North Beach.

Never shy, Hwang had adorned the walls with giant swimsuit shots of herself. (Available, we might add, on her Web site, www.esther.com.)

"Obviously, she is a very attractive woman who knows who she is and what she is," Burris told us.

Burris has a pretty good idea of his image as well -- and made a point of positioning himself as far away from the photos as possible.

Officer Linked To Violent Incidents
By Susan Sward
San Francisco Chronicle

May 24, 2007 – On May 12, 2007, at about 10:30 p.m., Esther Hwang -- a pin-up model and a former personal scheduler for Mayor Willie Brown -- was waiting for her boyfriend outside the Dolce club in North Beach when she saw some officers nearby.

Hwang, who said she had been celebrating after finishing exams at San Francisco Law School, said that, as a joke, she called out flirtatiously, "I guess you'll have to tackle me if I were to try to cross the street.''

Suddenly, she said, one officer -- who she later learned was Serna -- twisted her arm behind her back while another grabbed her from behind. She said Serna yanked her to the ground by her hair and said to her, "You f -- c -- ."

Those words, she told a crowded news conference Wednesday, made her "feel small and powerless.''

Put into a police wagon, she was driven to Central Station where she said she passed out due to an anxiety attack, hurting her head in the process. Later she was cited for battery on an officer and resisting arrest and was released.

Her lawyer, John Burris, told reporters that he had filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Serna and the department seeking $1 million in damages.

Burris said the police reports say she was "belligerently drunk,'' but he said Hwang had only consumed one drink.

Hwang is due in Superior Court late next month to face charges of resisting arrest and battery on a police officer. "What got to me the most,'' Hwang said, "is Officer Serna does this to people on a random basis, and no one does anything about it.''

Pin-up model sues SF police officers
By Susan Sward
San Francisco Chronicle

May 23, 2007 – An Oakland attorney announced today that he has filed a civil rights lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages against two San Francisco police officers who he said attacked and verbally demeaned his client.

Attorney John Burris said the incident involving his client, pin-up model Esther Hwang, occurred May 12 in front of Dolce nightclub in North Beach. In the 1990s, Hwang served as a personal scheduling secretary to Mayor Willie Brown.

Burris said the officers' unprovoked attack occurred when Hwang began a casual conversation with them after leaving the club with her boyfriend. She had been there to celebrate the completion of her exams at San Francisco Law School.

At a news conference, Hwang said that after she joked with officers about what they might do to her if she tried to cross the street, Officer Jesse Serna reacted by grabbing her and yanking her by her hair to the ground. She added that at that point he swore at her, using a sexually derogatory word that appalled her and made her feel powerless.

Burris added that the police report claimed that Hwang was belligerently drunk. But he said Hwang will present strong evidence that this allegation is false and that she only consumed one drink -- a pear cider -- that night.

Hwang is due in San Francisco Superior Court next month to face charges of resisting arrest and battery on a police officer. Burris pointed out that police did not cite her for being drunk in public as they reported.

North Beach Knockout
By Matier and Ross
San Francisco Chronicle

May 21, 2007 – Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown's onetime personal scheduler turned pin-up calendar model and Web page phenom, Esther Hwang, had a no-fun run-in with North Beach cops the other night.

Hwang says she was cuffed, roughed up, taken into custody and held for several hours -- all because she allegedly mouthed off to a couple of cops while waiting for her boyfriend outside a nightclub.

"They targeted me because of my relationship to Willie Brown,'' Hwang said.

Hwang, you may recall, made quite a splash back in the late 1990s -- toiling away in the mayor's office and accompanying Brown on meet-and-greets with foreign dignitaries, while moonlighting with her own (and still active) Web site featuring photos (at $10 to $15 a pop) of her ever-curvy self in hot bikinis and even hotter lingerie.

Which takes us to last weekend's wild ride, when Hwang, who had been out celebrating the completion of her law school exams, said she ran across a couple of officers on the street.

In a flirting voice, Hwang said, she jokingly called out: "I guess you'll have to tackle me if I try to cross the street."

Hwang said the next thing she knew, one cop was twisting her arm behind her back and somebody else was grabbing her from behind. In a fit of fear, she said, she stepped on one officer's foot. Then she was on the ground.

She was then tossed in the back of a police wagon and hauled down to Central Station, where, while cuffed to a railing, she had a panic attack and passed out.

After another wagon ride to the Hall of Justice -- and an examination by a nurse -- Hwang was handed a citation for assaulting an officer and resisting arrest and released.

Central Station Capt. Jim Dudley tells us only that his night officers "deal with a lot of adversity with all the alcohol-related incidents.''

"I don't think she's famous enough for anyone to concoct a story about her, but anything said at this point would be speculation,'' the captain said. "There is a complaint process, and we would encourage her to follow up on that if she thinks she been treated wrongly.''

Indeed, Hwang appears to be doing that and more -- on Friday, after a visit to the hospital to check out what she alleges were head and other injuries, she was conferring with Oakland power attorney John Burris about a possible wrongful-arrest suit.

It may also supply some fodder for Hwang's upcoming graduation from San Francisco Law School, where her old boss, Brown, will be delivering the commencement address.

Police officer noted for use of force is off of street duty
By Susan Sward
San Francisco Chronicle

June 7, 2007 –San Francisco police Officer Jesse Serna, who has been involved in five incidents in the last nine months in which citizens accused him of using excessive force without provocation, has been removed from street duty, the department said Wednesday.

Serna, a 12-year veteran who had been stationed in North Beach, has been assigned to an undisclosed "non-public-contact'' position, police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said. Serna was transferred based on a review of his record that Chief Heather Fong ordered after The Chronicle detailed four of the incidents in a story last month, Gittens said.

Fong said Wednesday night that the 41-year-old Serna "will be on this until further notice." He was taken off the streets last week.

A Chronicle analysis last year of police records from 1996 to 2004 identified Serna as the officer who had reported the most instances of use of force in the department. Two of the four recent incidents involving Serna have resulted in lawsuits against him and the city, and a third has led to a legal claim, which is often the precursor to a suit.

Word of Serna's transfer came the same day that yet another lawsuit was filed against him. The plaintiff in the latest case is a 27-year-old Menlo Park waiter who accuses Serna of slamming him against a police wagon and throwing him to the ground in response to a question about his conduct.

Efforts to reach Serna, the stepson of one of the department's highest-ranking officers, Cmdr. Stephen Tacchini, were unsuccessful.

In the latest lawsuit, Marco Maestrini said Serna attacked him after Maestrini questioned why a group of officers including Serna was beating another man on the street in North Beach.

Maestrini is seeking $1 million in damages in his lawsuit, which was filed in federal court by civil rights attorney John Burris of Oakland.

According to the lawsuit, Maestrini left the Dragon Bar nightclub on Broadway with friends about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 29. The suit says he was dressed in Halloween garb, "a jailbird costume and long-haired wig.'' It adds that he "was not intoxicated.''

When Maestrini and one of his friends saw someone being beaten by several officers, the suit says, Maestrini asked them, "What's going on?''

In response, Serna grabbed him, slammed him twice against a police wagon, hit him and dropped him to the ground, the suit says.

When Maestrini, blood flowing from his head, asked Serna why he was being detained, Serna told him, "Oh, you're crying like a little girl,'' the suit says.

Maestrini incurred a hospital bill of about $4,000 for treatment of head injuries and other injuries, according to the suit. No charges were ever filed against him, the suit says.

"This is another shocking example of how this officer is out of control," Burris said. "He has demonstrated a short fuse and treats citizens who make legitimate inquiries of him as if they have no rights.''

Burris filed a federal lawsuit two weeks ago on behalf of Esther Hwang, a former scheduling secretary for Mayor Willie Brown. She says Serna dropped her to the ground on May 12 on a North Beach street and called her a vulgar name after she jokingly asked officers what they would do if she tried to jaywalk.

In April, Burris sued on behalf of Greg Oliver, personal trainer for San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds. Oliver says that on Aug. 20, Serna hit him with his baton twice after Oliver pointed out that officers were using force on a man who had actually been a victim of an assault -- not a perpetrator -- on a North Beach street.

Both suits also seek $1 million in damages.

Serna is also the subject of a legal claim filed against the city. UCLA medical student Mehrdad Alemozaffar, 26, says several officers set upon him Dec. 17, and that he was zapped a dozen times by a sheriff's deputy's stun gun, after he told Serna he was going to make a complaint about his conduct.

The deputy filed a report saying he had used the stun gun only twice, but some witnesses say the zapping went on longer than that.

Sheriff Mike Hennessey said Wednesday that data downloaded from the stun gun indicate it had been fired three times that night, and he said one of those firings probably had been a test.

Hennessey said the device's printout did not give an accurate date or time of the incident, and "that raises a question of whether we need additional information on the accuracy of the device's reporting mechanism. We are doing everything we can to resolve this.''

In his claim, Alemozaffar says Serna made a comment similar to the one Maestrini reports in his suit. Alemozaffar says Serna told him "to stop acting like such a girl.''

San Francisco taxpayers have paid out a total of $195,000 in three earlier lawsuits unrelated to the current cases in which plaintiffs claimed that Serna used excessive force against them.

Supermodel Esther Hwang Caters to College Set with latest Line of Swimwear

February 1, 2007 (San Francisco) Calling all Coeds! Bay Area Beauty and International Supermodel and Pageant winner Esther Hwang today announced a focused line of swimwear directed towards women in the 18-25 year old demographic.

Hwang, who announced her line of self-designed "Monokinis" in September of 2006, is graduating from San Francisco School of Law in June 2007 with plans to take and pass the California state bar exam in July 2007.
Ms. Hwang has been involved with professional modeling for over a decade and said the new line of swimwear was designed purely out of necessity for comfort, while maintaining a form-flattering design. She said: "I think that many women will truly enjoy wearing the line. It really does make a person feel sexy, and it provides a comfort level that I believe is unmatched for any age group."

Hwang added: "Since I am currently a law school student, I'm not that far removed from things like looking your best for "Spring Break." Whether or not people really want to admit it, there is a lot of pressure to look and feel good while you are having a fun time. It really isn't just about fashion or feeling sexy, but being comfortable with yourself and letting your inner beauty meld with something that makes you look the best physically. I decided to put my experience to work for people who really are in my peer class. I know that a lot of these women may not be pursuing modeling, but they still have the need for comfort, colors, trendy design, and the necessity to look and feel good for others, but most importantly for themselves. My swimwear line features both traditional bikinis and the monokinis. It really is a natural extension to market specifically to these ladies and the price is something that can fit into most college budgets."

Hwang's bikinis and monokinis range in price from $59 to $99 and are available online in her store at www.esther.com.

Esther Hwang Brings the Heat with New Design of www.esther.com

Bay Area Celebrity, Web Supermodel Esther.comNovember 1, 2006 – Beauty Re-defined: Bay Area Beauty Esther Hwang
Swims Against the Tide
She’s an international supermodel. She has her own website with nearly 3 million visitors. She has produced six swimsuit calendars and is working with an agency to grace the cover of a seventh in 2007. She is an accomplished singer about to release her debut CD. She has an annual Christmas toy drive for underprivileged children in the bay area. Oh…and she will be taking the California state bar exam in July. Had enough yet?
Most of us would certainly consider the above paragraph a career’s worth of accomplishments, but not Bay Area beauty Esther Hwang. The granddaughter of one of the first women Methodist ministers in South Korea, Hwang first took San Francisco by storm after graduating with honors from Cal Berkeley. She worked in the office of then San Francisco Mayor, Willie Brown, Jr. and raised eyebrows because she had a very unique blend of beauty and brains; and, she certainly knows how to use both.
Hwang just announced she is revamping her website, AND, will be selling her own “self-designed” line of swimwear. Hwang’s “Monokini” is uniquely designed to provide comfort and a form-flattering fit for the sexy active woman of today. Hwang said the idea for the line was born from personal experience in her decade plus of swimwear modeling. “I never really felt that comfortable in any of the swimsuits I modeled through the years. Even when I was looking for a personal suit to enjoy for my own trips to the beach, nothing provided me with the comfort and look that I really desired. This line of swimwear is incredibly functional and fashionable and born out of necessity to look and feel good in your own skin.”
Of course feeling good in her own skin is something that Esther seems to do with ease. As an Asian-American model she has dealt with her share of “glass ceilings” and has really used the glass to build a beautiful reflection of what happens when you combine talent with tenacity. Discovered in Los Angeles at a grocery store, Hwang has been on a decade long whirlwind of modeling, acting, singing, matriculating and now, designing.
What’s next? Well someday Esther says she would perhaps like to pursue politics and be a representative for the State of California. Of course, as an Asian-American woman who just happens to be a supermodel and will soon be a lawyer this seems a little out of the norm; almost like swimming against the tide.
So will she be a major success in all of these endeavors? Let’s just say that I’m not from Vegas, but I wouldn’t bet against her.
Ken Bryant

Ken Bryant is a graduate of the University of Virginia with over 15 years experience in Marketing. He is also a free-lance writer and a friend of the amazing Esther! Despite her discomfort with suits other than the “Monokini,” he thinks she looks fine in her skin.

Esther Teams up with Renowned Jewelry Designer Sunil to offer “Esther Charms”

Bay Area Celebrity, Web Supermodel Esther.comOctober 17, 2006 (San Francisco) Bay Area Beauty and International Supermodel Esther Hwang today announced an agreement with renowned jewelry designer Sunil R. Mohanani to offer Chandelier earrings and pendants through the boutique on her new website.

The line of jewelry known as Sandals for your neck™, “represents a unique combination of style and custom jewelry design” according to Sunil. Sandals for your neck™ continues a family tradition that began in 1968 when master jeweler Ramesh Mohanani founded the Chalet D'or company. In early 2000, Sunil R Mohanani decided to bring their family tradition of quality and service to a wider public through the Internet. This latest agreement provides obvious benefits for Sunil, Esther and the many visitors and shoppers to the newly revamped www.esther.com website.

Hwang, who recently announced her own line of self-designed swimwear, believes that “Esther Charms” will be a successful addition to her online boutique. “With a variety of high quality, semi-precious gems and the best in design and intricate craftsmanship, Sandals for your neck™ is a natural extension of the Esther product line and image,” Esther states. “I happened to meet Sunil and his lovely wife some time back on an Alaskan cruise and was taken aback with his talent and the sheer beauty of his designs. I’m delighted to bring his work to my website so that this talent and beauty can be shared with my visitors and fans.”

The new website, slated to be launched in late October will feature an expanded storefront, vibrant new colors, more information on Esther’s professional pursuits and plenty of exciting photos from events and swimwear shoots.

Esther Hwang proves she is a "Designing Woman."

Bay Area Celebrity, Web Supermodel Esther.comSeptember 1, 2006 (San Francisco) Bay Area Beauty and International Supermodel and Pageant winner Esther Hwang today announced additional plans on a complete line of swimwear designed by Ms. Hwang.

Hwang, who recently signed with North Beach Models, was in Las Vegas this week attending the MAGIC Marketplace show. The MAGIC fashion expo brings together some of the top buyers and sellers of fashion apparel in the world. MAGIC boasts well over 100,000 attendees and more than 3,500 manufacturers with access to over 5,000 brands and (Esther Hwang - Cliff Nakamura photography) private labels.

Hwang was tight-lipped about the new line specifics such as styles, colors and distribution channel, but promises that the swimwear will be sexy, vibrant and extremely comfortable. Ms. Hwang has been involved with professional modeling for over a decade, but said the prototypes on the new line of swimwear were designed purely out of necessity for comfort, while maintaining a form-flattering design. She added: "Despite working as a swimwear model for a number of years, I've never really felt that any of the commercial lines combined the style and comfort that truly makes me feel good about my body while letting me be myself. I think that many women will truly enjoy wearing the line. It really does make a person feel sexy, but more importantly really comfortable in their own skin."

Hwang promises that more details will be coming soon on her website www.esther.com about the swimwear, so she encourages her fans, the swimwear industry and potential customers to stay tuned for updates.

A former Miss Asian America and Miss California USA finalist, Hwang is an accomplished entertainer, aspiring lawyer and graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She has been featured in her own swimwear calendar for six years and this year will appear with other models in the North Beach Models 2007 Swimwear Calendar.
